environmental factors

  • 193 species are endangered from palm oil harvesting. Nine of them are shown in the images below.

  • Deforestation caused 80% of the carbon emissions of Indonesia

  • 47% of deforestation in Malaysia has resulted from palm oil

  • For each hectare of rainforest that is destroyed for palm plantations, 174 tons of carbon are released in the atmosphere.

  • Oil palm plantations cover more 27 million+ hectares

  • Many corporations have chosen not to address their use of palm oil in their environmental policy statements.

  • Of those that have, 4,000 of them have joined RSPO, an organization that trains shareholders to harvest palm oil sustainably.

  • However, none of the companies have chosen to address the extensive pollution that results from the freight shipment of palm oil from Malaysia to the USA.

  • CO2 emissions from freight shipment account for 30% of all transportation-related emissions.\

Regardless of harvesting method, palm oil generates mass pollution and a domestic alternative needs to replace it.
